In many industries, the combination of different materials by the special coating of surfaces is nowadays said to be the techological growth path. By order of well-known customers, COATEMA creates new high-duty materials by choosing the right processes and raw materials. COATEMA has created the necessary methodical and plant-specific preconditions for this purpose and has proved them many times.
The integrated methodical solution
COATEMA´s innovation management is a team-oriented cycle, joining three sources of know-how: Chemistry, process engineering and mechanical engineering. In some cases, it is completed by material and marketing experts. In each stage of the targeted "innovation cycle", the focuses of the experts involved complement one another, their expertise remains in demand until the full production output is reached and they are jointly responsible until the project is completed. The COATEMA team and, if required, external experts work closely together with the customer´s team.
Pilot plants that support innovations.
The formula for success is to discuss every alternative recipe and process variable in COATEMA´s R&D center under industrial conditions. This happens mostly in the direct dialogue between the purchaser, sub-suppliers and the COATEMA coating experts. It aims at obtaining from the lab trials a coating result that is as close to real production as possible in order to refine these results in further trials on a pilot plant. COATEMA´s R&D Center facilitates the practical test of almost every coating theory.
Transferability of hundred percent.
Almost all lab machines and pilot plants are multifunctional. This means that the most different coating and laminating processes can be realised for the most versatile application areas. During the design of the coating lab´s equipment, great importance was attached to the trials´reproducibility and transferability into practice. This goal has been attained to almost one hundred percent by a sophisticated techology and the modular construction of the plants.
Multiple applications for substrates and recipes
Apart from versatile textile substrates, the most different products can be processed continuously or discontinuously in the COATEMA R&D Center:
Paper, metal and plastic foils, nonwovens, foams, glass, carbon fibres, compounds and other high-tech materials which are used e.g. for the production of fuel cells of flexible solar cells.

Development objective: Churn out of fuel cells
In cooperation with COATEMA, the Forschungszentrum Jülich develops the process for the serial production of fuel cells on a COATEMA Desk Coater. The object is the proiftable continuous production of "Electrode-Membrane-Electrode-Units" (MEA). This MEA is the main component for the production of electricity and heat from hydrogen or methanol in a fuel cell.
Lamination of flexible solar cells on roof membranes as a COATEMA´s custom made solution.
In cooperation with Solar Integrated Technology, Los Angeles, COATEMA has developed production plants for the lamination of flexible solar cells. The economically produced and readily networked solar cell webs are laid over large areas, e.g. on hall roofs. SIT is the world´s market leader for integrated solar roofs.
